Whidbey man disappears

Carl Jesberg of Freeland has been missing since Dec. 21.

“The Island County Sheriff’s Department is still searching for a Freeland man who has been missing since Dec. 21.Sheriff Mike Hawley said Carl Jesberg, 49, lives at a Steelhead Drive address. He and his wife operate a successful window supply business. Earlier this month his wife left on a holiday trip to the East Coast, expecting him to join her later by taking a Dec. 21 flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. He was not on that flight.Hawley said Jesberg was arrested by the State Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence in the early morning hours of Dec. 21. He called his wife at 5 a.m. Pacific Time to explain that he had missed his flight, but he did not tell her of his arrest.Later that same day, a neighbor saw Jesberg going in and out of his house at Lagoon Point. And that was the last the Sheriff’s Department knows about him. Later, however, his wife received a letter postmarked Dec. 21 that Hawley said could be construed as a suicide note. His wife has since returned to their Lagoon Point residence. The Jesbergs own several cars between themselves and their business, but all are accounted for, Hawley said. Jesberg had no criminal record and there is no indication of foul play. None of his personal items, valuables or financial items were taken from the home.Jesberg is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Birchfield at (360) 321-4400. “
