Whidbey foundation awards second round of grants

Whidbey Community Founda-tion awarded its second round of grants totaling $25,000 from the COVID-19 Community Resilience Fund.

To date, WCF has awarded nearly $70,000 to 14 nonprofits from the fund.

Grantees of the fund serve all parts of Whidbey Island and support the most vulnerable populations affected by the pandemic. The second round of grants were awarded to Citizens Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse, the Coupeville and Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Clubs, Readiness to Learn, SPIN Cafe and Toddler Learning Center.

The funds will go toward a variety of needs, including tele-health therapy for survivors of abuse, tele-health services for early childhood intervention, free childcare for healthcare workers and first responders, technology to support remote learning for homeless youth and meal services for the homeless.

The COVID-19 Fund was started in March, with $25,000 seed funding designated by the Whidbey Community Foundation’s board of directors. From the support of the Island community and beyond, the foundation raised over $160,000 for the fund.

The foundation anticipates awarding several rounds of grants from Resilience Fund.

The initial phases will prioritize grants to community-based organizations that are serving those who are immediately and disproportionately suffering from this crisis.

The immediate focus areas include, but are not limited to, food insecurity, economic insecurity, housing insecurity, access to health care and prescription medications, costs related to mitigating virus transmissions, access to transportation and access to childcare.

In addition to funding, the foundation started a list of resources for nonprofit organizations impacted by coronavirus which will be regularly updated on its website.
