A 22-year-old Oak Harbor man admitted that he violated a no-contact order by calling his ex-girlfriend ten times in a day and watching her apartment from a nearby location, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Jermaine Flores in Island County Superior Court Jan. 16 with stalking in violation of a protection order and a violation of a protection order.

Flores pleaded not guilty Feb. 2. He remains in jail on $75,000 bail.

The investigation into the case began after a 22-year-old woman reported that her ex-boyfriend, Flores, repeatedly called her on the night of Jan. 12, even though she had a domestic violence no-contact order barring him from communicating with her. The woman said Flores threatened to kill her and her children, according to the report by Oak Harbor Police Detective Mike Bailey.

Bailey spoke to Flores on the phone the next day. Flores denied doing anything wrong, but refused to go to the police department. He swore at the detective and hung up, Bailey wrote.

Next, Bailey contacted the woman, who was crying and said Flores had left messages on her answering machine and would not stop calling her. The woman said she was concerned that Flores might be watching her apartment.

Bailey went to the woman’s home to listen to the messages. Flores called her about ten times while the detective was there, Bailey wrote.

Bailey arrested Flores later in the day. In an interview, Flores admitted that he violated the court order several times, the report states. He said he called her about ten times that day and he admitted that he had watched her apartment, Bailey wrote.

Flores told the detective that he is an alcoholic and that he violated the no-contact order because he loves the woman, the report indicates.

According to court documents, Flores had previously been convicted of fourth-degree assault for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and he had been arrested three times previously on suspicion of violating the no-contact order.
