VFW hosts armistice picnic

July 27, 2003, is the 50th anniversary date of the signing of the Armistice at Panmunjom, Korea.

This event, 50 years ago, symbolized the cease-fire and suspension of hostilities between North Koreans and Chinese allies with United Nations troops led by the U.S., sent to aid South Korea.

In honor of this historic event, commemoration services and memorials will take place throughout the United States.

Several local events will also take place on Sunday, July 27, to honor community members who fought in the Korean War and recognize them for the sacrifices they and their families made during the Korean conflict.

July 27, starting at 1 p.m., Veteran of Foreign Wars Whitehead-Muzzall Post 7392 in Oak Harbor will host a community Korean War Commemoration potluck and picnic. The post is on Goldie Road in Oak Harbor

The picnic will feature speakers honoring those who fought, as well as speakers who will recount their personal memories and experiences of time spent in Korea during the conflict. Veterans will also lead a moment of silence for those who died during the war.

Doug Tyler, the Korean War commemorative chairman for the VFW at Post 7392, said he believes it is important for community members to recognize and honor those who served and fought in the Korean War. “Education on this subject is important, so that we don’t insult those who fought and gave their lives. And so that we never have to repeat the process again,” Tyler said.

Other relatively local events are a statewide ceremony in honor of Korean War veterans at Watkins Field, Fort Lewis and a Korean War children’s memorial dedication in Bellingham.

The Korean War Armistice Ceremony at Fort Lewis will take place on July 27 at 3 p.m. and consist of military ceremony in honor of war veterans and their families.

The Korean War children’s memorial dedication on July 27, starts at 1 p.m. with the San Hak International Children’s Choir of Seattle and continuing with a program including presentations by Korean War orphans and veterans.
