Unlawful showering could land Oak Harbor man in prison

A homeless man in Oak Harbor could face a prison sentence for taking a shower in the wrong place.

Prosecutors charged the suspect, Andrew A. Bugge, 33, in Island County Superior Court May 3 with burglary in the second degree and theft in the third degree.

If convicted of the charges, Bugge could face more than two years in prison because of a criminal record that includes burglary and malicious mischief charges, as well as 25 gross misdemeanors, court documents indicate.

On the morning of April 29, the manager of the Coachman Inn in Oak Harbor reported to police that an unknown person who was not a customer was inside a room without permission.

The intruder had locked the “security latch” on the door. As a result, the manager had to climb onto a balcony and open a sliding glass door to enter the room and unlocked the door, the report states.

Police officers went to the room and knocked on the bathroom door after hearing the shower running.

Bugge responded from inside, saying he would be out shortly. He eventually opened the door with a hotel towel wrapped around the lower part of his body.

Bugge claimed he met someone walking down the street who offered to let him shower in his room at the inn, the police reports states.

Officers found women’s clothing and a used condom inside the bathroom. Bugge said he was washing the clothes for a friend.
