Detectives accused a 19-year-old man of walking into a Freeland home without permission, picking up a woman out of bed, taking the struggling woman to his car and driving away with her, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Eric Severson, a Freeland resident, in Island County Superior Court July 7 with unlawful imprisonment.

He pleaded not guilty July 15. Judge Pro Tem Chris Lyons set Severson’s bail at $40,000.

Detective Mike Plumberg with the Island County Sheriff’s Office wrote in his report that Severson went to a Freeland home where his ex-girlfriend was staying in the morning of July 1.

Plumberg wrote that Severson walked into the house, picked the sleeping woman out of the bed and took her to his car. He then drove recklessly to the woman’s Clinton home.

The owner of the Freeland home said he let Severson into the house and watched him pick up the woman. He said he didn’t stop Severson because he was afraid. He followed Severson’s car to the woman’s apartment.

At the apartment, the woman gave Severson her key so that he could go into her apartment and get his possessions. She said she was scared to go with him.

Severson told Plumberg that he grabbed the woman and drove her to her apartment simply because he wanted his wallet, court documents show.

If convicted, Severson could face between three and eight months in jail.
