A resident, a firefighter and a dog suffered injuries in a Monday night house fire in Oak Harbor, but they all are recuperating nicely.

Chief Ray Merrill with the Oak Harbor Fire Department said the couple who live in a one-story house on Southeast Barrington Drive left home at about 9 p.m. The woman returned at about 10:30 p.m. and discovered a house filled with heavy smoke.

The woman went into the burning house twice to look for her dog and found him in the bedroom. The pooch was barely breathing and was rushed to a veterinarian’s office by the male resident.

Merrill said the woman suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment.

A firefighter became woozy on the scene and was also taken to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

The fire started on a couch. Merrill said the cause is under investigation but “appears to be accidental.”

Firefighters were able to “knock down” the fire very quickly, Merrill said. Firefighters from his department were joined by engine companies from Navy Region Northwest and North Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

“It had the potential to be a big fire,” he said.

The blaze was confined to the couch, a bookcase and a table. The heat from the fire also damaged the entire structure. Merrill estimates the total damage at about $25,000.

According to Merrill, the woman was treated and released from the hospital at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday; the firefighter was released a half hour earlier.

Merrill said the dog is being treated by veterinarian John Mangiameli at the North Whidbey Veterinary Hospital and is doing well.
