Learn about the history of the American flag at a Twenty-Seven Flags Ceremony set for 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7392, 3037 N. Goldie Road.

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 7392 is organizing the event, which includes a display and historical talk about the 27 commissioned flags.

Following the presentation, there will be a retirement ceremony for American flags behind the post. Anyone is welcome to bring worn, torn or stained American flags to be retired. The U.S. Flag Code calls for flags that are “no longer a fitting emblem of display” to be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

The flags can either be folded and set in the fire or the stars and stripes can be cut from the flag and the stripes can be laid in the fire followed by the canton, according to the National Flag Foundation.

Flag retirement is a community service the VFW offers every few years, said Debbie Brundage of the Ladies Auxiliary.
