A different week, the same story for the Coupeville football team.

Another series of tough breaks led the Wolves to their fifth straight loss, 39-7, to Concrete Friday night.

“It seems to be the same thing with us having a melt down every week,” head coach Ron Bagby said.

Trailing 14-0 in the second half, the Wolves wanted to make the game close before heading into the locker room. Working down into Lion territory with 2:00 to go, sophomore quarterback Mike Bagby took aim toward an open Kasey Jensen at the Concrete 25. Battling the moisture, the ball just skipped through the hands of Jensen and off his face mask into the arms of the defender, Nick Aldridge. Aldridge took the deflected pass 75-yards for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

After the ensuing kickoff, Coupeville got their offense set to go one more time. On their first play Bagby cocked his arm ready to make another throw. The ball slipped out of his hand right into the arms of Zack Coggins, who returned it 40-yards for their second consecutive interception for a touchdown.

“We had a good play out of it too, the ball just slipped out of Mike’s hands,” coach Bagby said. “It was just freak stuff.”

Instead of taking a 14-0 or 14-7 deficit to the locker room, the Wolves suddenly found themselves trailing 27-0.

“By then you’re out of your game and you don’t get what you want to do,” Bagby said.

Coupeville put together the first score of the second half, scoring on a 2-yard run by senior Casey Mitchell. The P.A.T. by Andrew Mouw was the last offense Coupeville was able to put on the board.

Concrete used their strong running attack to maintain possession of the ball and move the clock in the final half. The Lions rushed for 175 total yards, opposed to the 91 of Coupeville.

Concrete quarterback Joey Penninger also had a productive day throwing the ball, going 4-for-10, with 114-yards and three touchdowns. He threw for scores of 13, 19 and 62-yards.

Leading rushers for the Wolves were Mitchell with 48-yards on four carries and sophomore J.J. Marti with 39-yards on seven carries. Bagby ended the day 12-for-29 passing for 82-yards and three interceptions.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Andrew Moon and defensive back Kirby Mitchell led Coupeville with seven tackles apiece, while Mitchell added on six.

Going into this Friday’s homecoming game against LaConner, coach Bagby knows what his team needs to improve upon.

“We are going to try and control the ball a little more and keep our defense off the field,” he said. “We’re going to concentrate on not making mistakes.”

Despite their recent struggles, Bagby is happy with the team’s willingness to keep giving all their effort.

“These kids play hard and they haven’t quit,” he said.

The Wolves, who are now 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league, will face off against a LaConner Braves team that is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northwest A.

“They’re pretty good,” Bagby said. “They similar to Concrete and they run the ball pretty well.”

LaConner’s league loss was a 55-14 drubbing by number-one ranked Archbishop Murphy.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Mickey Clark Field.
