Town puts curbside recycling on hold

Officials for the town of Coupeville have put plans for a curbside recycling program on hold.

Officials for the town of Coupeville have put plans for a curbside recycling program on hold.

Mayor Nancy Conard said during a Sept. 8 council meeting it was best to participate in the curbside recycling program currently being considered by Island County. That program would offer customers a rate 60 cents less per month than the proposal being considered by town officials.

Last month, the town unveiled a proposal in which Island Disposal would offer curbside recycling to town residents at a cost of $6.95 a month in addition to the fee they already pay for disposal.

Town officials argued that people would actually see a reduction in the trash disposal fee through participating in the recycling program.

Conard didn’t know how long the town will wait before the county makes a decision on its recycling program. But she hopes a decision comes sooner rather than later.

“We’ll see what happens on that,” Conard said during the meeting.
