Town garbage service rates increase slightly under new contract

Island Disposal will raise service rates by 6% to offset the increased cost of labor and operations.

Coupeville residents may see a small increase in garbage service rates when the town renews its contract with Island Disposal at an upcoming meeting.

Island Disposal manager Andrew Riggs gave a presentation about some of the changes to the contract during Coupeville town council’s Nov. 23 meeting. Most notably, the company will be raising service rates by 6%. Riggs said the rate increase is meant to offset the increased cost of labor and operations for the company.

According to meeting documents, the rate increase will amount to less than $2 a month for most services. For example, under the new contract, a household currently paying $21.54 a month for weekly service to one 32-gallon can would see its rate increase by $1.29 for a new monthly rate of $22.83.

Besides the rate increase, Island Disposal is also shortening the time allowance for late bill payments and discontinuation of service. The company will add rear-loading pick up of weekly trash and remove weight limits for trash cans.

The council will vote to approve the new contract at its next meeting.
