Tourism: Slothfulness a luxury, not credo

“Do nothing here.” That often maligned mantra of our latest pitch, for paying visitors, is certainly exemplified on the web site I visited this morning.

“Do nothing here.” That often maligned mantra of our latest pitch, for paying visitors, is certainly exemplified on the web site I visited this morning. A small teaser ad for Island County’s promotion appeared above the home page of a Seattle newspaper. Good placement indeed! I clicked right away and found a very attractive presentation.

Whoever is responsible for maintaining the site, however, has done nothing there for months! I was surprised to find an emphasis on what to do in September when midweek ferry lines are manageable. That calendar of events is certainly stale. The kite festival has flown. The hospital’s Tour de Whidbey is long over, and so forth. On the page featuring “most recently” appeared magazine and newspaper raves about the islands, which hadn’t been updated in a year. Or, the cynic might ask, have there been no laudatory pieces published at all in 2004.

Surely we can expect more from those maintaining Island County’s ‘official’ site, even if we’re promoting sloth to potential guests.
