I had to laugh at your column about the check engine light. The check engine light in my Jeep Grand Cherokee recently came on while I was driving back from the mall. You’re right; it is quite alarming to see this esoteric light come on; so much so that I broke out the (rarely read) Owner’s Manual at the next stoplight.
While driving, I managed to skim the pertinent section (reading while driving was probably more dangerous than anything that stupid light signified) and ascertained that there probably wasn’t anything dire happening. Nevertheless, I took the car in, and $80 later was told that my gas cap ring was loose.
This was two days ago. And you know what? Thinking back, that light came on about a year ago, too.
Do you drive a Jeep? Maybe it’s a conspiracy by the Jeep people. Thanks for the chuckle.
