Tears mix with patriotism at concert

'Sound of America' rose to the occasion

The gymnasium at Oak Harbor Elementary School was decorated with symbols and colors of patriotism, while small voices, singing songs about pride in America, moved some in the adult audience to tears.

For about six weeks, 100 third, fourth, and fifth-graders under the direction of music teacher Diana Manuel practiced the music that together became “The Sound of America” patriotic musical at the school on the afternoon of Nov. 21.

Additionally, the gym was decorated with patriotic artwork created by the students. The students combined their artistic creativity and musical ability to honor U.S. military veterans in this post-Veterans’ Day event.

The children make up the classrooms of teachers Sharon Nicholson, Bev Bowen, Tricia Hart and Donna Smith.

Manuel described the event as “beautiful” and said that the audience was visibly moved emotionally.

“We had a standing ovation,” Manuel said. “The parents were in tears.”
