A 23-year-old Coupeville man accused of attempting to rob a woman at gunpoint in her home March 11 confessed to the crime and helped a detective gather evidence against him, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Quintin Raines in Island County Superior Court March 14 with burglary in the first degree and attempted robbery in the first degree.

Island County Detective David Dennis wrote in his report on the incident that a resident of Snakelum Point in Coupeville said an unknown man with a nylon stocking over his face entered her home armed with a handgun and demanded money.

After the woman asked the robber why he was doing this, he left without taking the money.

A neighbor who had spoken to the suspect earlier told police he had the word “Mobile” printed on the front of his shirt. Based on this information, a detective deduced that the robber worked at a Goldie Road business and was able to identify him as Raines from witness descriptions, Dennis wrote.

When officers arrested Raines at his work, he immediately confessed, the report states. He told the investigators that his gun — which turned out to be a pellet gun — was in his car and gave them permission to get it. He also accompanied the detective to his work to get his keys and then to his home to gather the clothes he wore during the robbery attempt, the report states.

Raines told the officer that he was stressed because of personal and financial problems, Dennis wrote.

If convicted of the charges, Raines could face more than three years in prison under the standard sentencing range.
