Now that school is over and kids have a great deal of time on their hands, parents are looking for fun and constructive ways to fill this time.
Some fun time-filling events parents can mark on their calendars include summer activities planned by the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District.
The district’s agenda of “Super Summer Special Events†has six main attractions. The first, which was a “Vacation Celebration,†took place on June 17, and kicked off the summer free time with fun, food and games.
“Everything seems to be going really well for the summer,†said Craig Carlson, director of the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.
Of the district’s remaining five events, four of them have to do with water fun.
“We’re seeing a big turn out with the summer schedule,†Carlson said. “We’ve packed the pool with everything that’s going on.â€
On Friday, July 15, from 10 p.m. to midnight, the pool staff will transform the facility into the setting of a “Teen Moonlight Mysterious Aquatic Adventure.†For $2.50 youth can come and enjoy food, beverages and a mystery.
Then, on Saturday, July 30, from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m., families can come and experience water entertainment at its finest with the “It’s a Wild, Wacky, Way Out, Wet World — What’s Happening?†event for only $6.75 per family.
And for $10 per person, kids and their parents can sign up for the “Johnny’s Junior Triathlon and Family Relay,†which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1:30 p.m. Triathlon application deadline is Aug. 5, and participants receive a T-shirt and dessert for their efforts.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, the events return to the water with a “Family Float-In and Frankfurter Fest Final Fling.â€
Starting at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until 7:15 p.m., families can come and enjoy hotdogs and drinks, swim time and an array of floatation devices for $6.75 per family.
And then the very next day, Sunday, Aug. 28, community member can bring their own furry family canine and doggy-paddle around with them in the pool during the “2nd Annual Dog Days of Summer Swim,†after which pool staff will empty and wash the pool and get it ready for another year of schedules and lessons.
