String of burglaries reported downtown

Officials for the Town of Coupeville are advising residents to keep businesses and homes secure after a series of burglaries were reported last Thursday morning.

Coupeville Marshal Rick Norrie said one business and one residence were successfully burgled and another business had an attempted break-in.

All were in the downtown area and police believe the three incidents were related, but isolated at the same time.

“Usually we get a pattern,” Norrie said. “There was no pattern. I do believe that offender has moved on.”

The business that was successfully burgled was Lavender Wind on Coveland Street.

The perpetrator entered the business through a back window and stole two computers, a change jar collecting donations for wharf repairs and ate an ice cream bar.

The computers were located later that day by Deputy Bo Miller under a gazebo at Coupeville Town Park.

Owner Sarah Richards posted about the break-in on social media and even praised law enforcement for finding her stolen items so quickly, saying she was “seriously impressed.”

A nearby residence reported someone broke in and trashed the kitchen and stole a radio. The radio was recovered with the computers, Norrie said.

Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard issued a notice in response to the incidents and asked citizens to be aware.

Norrie said his office is continuing to investigate the cases and follow new leads. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Marshal’s Office.

“As always, we encourage business and residence owners to ensure doors and windows are locked, and that attractive items such as computers and money are well secured,” Conard wrote in her notice. “Any business that would like to have our department review their building is welcome to call the Coupeville Police Department.”
