A motorcyclist killed in a three-vehicle accident on North Whidbey March 29 has been identified as an active duty member of the Navy.

The Washington State Patrol reported that David M. Burk, a 37-year-old Oak Harbor resident, died at the scene of the three-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near the intersection with Libbey Road. His identification was delayed as the Navy contacted his next of kin.

Burk was a P-3C/P-8A electronic warfare operator and a weapons and tactics instructor at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before the Navy, he worked as an account manager for PepsiCo in Rochester, New York.

The accident memo states Burk was riding a 2022 Harley Davidson north on Highway 20 and crossed the centerline at the curve near the intersection with Libbey Road. The motorcycle struck an oncoming 1998 Toyota pickup before hitting a 2002 Ford Focus head-on.

Burk was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured.

The State Patrol reported that Burk was not wearing a USDOT compliant helmet and that it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
