Oak Harbor High School golfer Judd Ford has made a habit of second-day comebacks, but he won’t get the chance at this year’s state 3A tournament.
Coupeville’s Austin Fields, however, did make the cut in the 1A state tournament and will shoot another round today, May 25.
Ford, a senior, shot a 79 in the first day of the state 3A championship Tuesday, May 24, at the MeadowWood Golf Course in Spokane and missed the cut by one stroke.
The 79 put Ford in 47th place. Twelve golfers shot 78 and grabbed the final spots in the field for the second round.
Samson Martinez of Pasco topped the 3A list with a 67.
Ford is known for second-day comebacks. Last year at state, Ford made the cut and jumped from 30th to 19th in the final standings. At district in 2010, he went from 23rd the first day to 10th the second. In this year’s district tournament, he moved from seventh to third.
Ford qualified for state each of his four years in high school. Last’s year’s 19th place was his best finish.
Teammate Greg Martin shot an 84 Tuesday and finished in 68th in the tournament of 80 golfers.
On the girls side, Oak Harbor senior Millie Goebel carded a 108 to place 77th; 93 strokes was the cutoff at Liberty Lake in Spokane.
Wildcat freshman Annie Leete also qualified for state but did not compete because she was attending her brother Jake’s graduation ceremonies at the United States Naval Academy.
Peninsula’s Rachel Lewis and Shorewood’s Cassie McKinley lead the 3A girls with 71’s.
Fields shot 84 at the Home Course in DuPont to move on to Wednesday’s final round. The cut was 85. Brett Johnson of Ridgefield led after round one with a 71.
