The Oak Harbor High School boys golf team is in rebuilding mode after losing seven prominent players to graduation.
Junior Caleb Brookshier and sophomore Nick Whitley, last season’s Rookie of the Year, are the only returning lettermen for coach David Smith.
“Both Nick and Caleb played during varsity matches,” Smith said, “so I have high hopes that they will step up their game this year and contribute to the team’s success.”
With mostly freshmen and sophomores trying out this year, the team will be young, Smith added.
“(It) will be a little bit of a building year.”
He noted that with some molding from the coaching staff, which includes new assistant Joel Schelling, the “young players can really become successful golfers.
“They have a lot of raw talent and a desire to learn, so we feel very positive about this season.”
Among the freshman is the team’s top newcomer, Haven Brown, Smith said. “(He) looks to be a solid addition to the varsity team.”
Smith said if the team “dedicates itself to becoming better golfers, we have the time and opportunity to grow into a very strong team.”
Oak Harbor begins the season at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, when Edmonds-Woodway and Lake Stevens visit the Whidbey Golf Club.
