Splashers break into win column

John Hu swims two state qualifying times

All it took was a couple of meets to get a few things sorted out.

After losing the first two times they took to the pool, the Wildcat swimmers are now on a roll just like the other Oak Harbor winter sports teams and have won their last two meets.

On Friday, Dec. 8, the Wildcats traveled to Anacortes and picked up a 91-78 victory, and then returned to their home waters at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool for a three-way meet against Meadowdale and Lynnwood Dec.12.

The Wildcats were pumped and scored 97 points to defeat the Meadowdale squad that finished a distant second with 57. Lynnwood came in third with 17 points.

It was a big day for Oak Harbor swimmers. John Hu recorded state qualification times in two events, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley, to run his total in state qualifying events to three.

The sophomore swam a state time in the 100-meter backstroke at the first meet of the season against Kamiak.

Oak Harbor dominated the meet winning the 200 and 400-meter freestyle relays and the 50 and 100-meter freestyles, in addition to Hu’s victories.

The Wildcats had the top three finishers in the 200-meter individual medley, with Cameron Spence second and Daniel Saiku third.

“I thought I swam pretty well, but I’m not sure whether I got the state qualifying time,” Hu said about his time in the individual medley.

As things turned out, his 2:16.17 clocking was good enough to qualify the sophomore for the state championships.

Hu was also a member of both freestyle relay teams along with Spencer Livermore and Spence and Zach Johnston, and finished the meet with four first-place finishes.

“John was really quick in the race, I looked over and thought ‘man, he’s definitely got it’,” Spence Johnston, who swam a time of 2:31.03 in the individual medley, said.

Johnston, a senior, also had four first-place finishes, winning the 50 and 100-meter freestyles and also swimming the anchor leg on both relay teams.

“That guy, I was watching him with the corner of my eye, and I didn’t think he was going to keep up with me that long,” Johnston said about the 50-meter event he won in a time of 28.06. “He made me give a little bit more of a push in the second part of the race.”

Livermore was second in the 100-meter butterfly and the 500-meter freestyle, Chris Klieman was second in the 100-meter backstroke and Chris Rankin took second in the 100-meter breaststroke.

“The guys have been doing well in the last couple of meets we’ve been in,” coach Erika Miller said. “It was a really good swim for them today. It was also good that we were able to get two more state qualifying times. We now have three of them.”

Oak Harbor swam at Shorewood yesterday and returns home to face Lynden on Dec. 20.
