Splash park opens in Oak Harbor

Oak Harbor is turning on the spigot to its splash park in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Oak Harbor is turning on the spigot to its splash park in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The city announced that Shipwreck Shores Splash Park in Windjammer Park opened for the summer season Friday, May 27.

The start of the splash season may be a bit cool. The National Weather Service predicts that Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy, with highs in the upper 50s and a 50% chance of rain. Memorial Day will be a little warmer, with partly sunny skies and a high near 62 degrees.

The city reports that Shipwreck Shores will remain open throughout the summer, seven days a week, between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last year, the city didn’t open the splash park until June 25.

A new feature has been added to the park to conserve water. Children will be able to activate water throughout the park by pushing 10-inch, circular yellow push pads.

Water flowing through the “lazy river,” and three fountains about halfway up the river, will operate automatically for three minutes, every 15 minutes during the hours of operation, according to a city press release. In April, the Public Works Water Division installed a sub-meter to track water use. Public Works staff will read the meter monthly to establish an annual water usage record for budgeting purposes.
