South Whidbey wreck claims two teenagers

Two South Whidbey teenagers died in a one-car accident on a residential street in Langley Monday afternoon.

Jayson Jelinek, an 18-year-old Freeland resident, was driving three other teens west on Third Street in a 1985 Honda Accord. He was speeding and lost control, veering off the road and striking a tree.

Jelinek and passenger Kelly Frantz, a 17-year-old Freeland resident, were pronounced dead at the scene. Frantz was in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt.

Two other 17-year-old passengers, Micah Petrich of Freeland and Miles Sanstad of Langley, were hospitalized. Paramedics airlifted Petrich to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

Petrich, who was not wearing a seat belt, was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday morning.

Sanstad was transported by ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital. He was treated and released the same day.

The State Patrol reported that speed was the cause of the accident. Investigators are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but toxicology results are pending.
