South Whidbey Tilth is offering a variety of variety of educational opportunities this month. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

“How to Stretch Your Food Budget While Shopping at the Farmers’ Markets” will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at South Whidbey Tilth classroom, 2812 Thompson Road in Langley. Learn more about supplemental nutrition and matching programs that help benefit dollars go further at the farmers’ markets. Presenter Susan Prescott is the lead for the program. She is joined by Rachel Joseph, a dietitian and nutrition specialist at Good Cheer Food Bank. There is no fee. For more information contact Prescott, prscot@whidbey.net or 360-682-8642.

“Warm Season Vegetables, Seed to Table with Anza Muenchow” will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 24 at South Whidbey Tilth classroom.

Growing foods on Whidbey Island is a fun activity and gives us delicious dinners. Meet other gardeners at Tilth and hear all the best tips on making your food garden more successful this year. You’ll save money by not having to buy so much fresh produce. We will cover soil preparation, timing, pest management and all the varieties that do well in our climate. Some favorite crops include tomatoes, basil, peppers, all squashes, cucumbers, beans, corn, eggplant and ground cherries.

Anza Muenchow, formerly a WSU Extension educator, is a small farmer who has sold fresh produce at the Tilth Sunday market for many years. She enjoys promoting more food growing in our community. The fee is $5 for Tilth members and $15 for non-members. For questions and to RSVP, contact education@southwhidbeytilth.org.

“Noxious Weed ID and Control Techniques with Seth Luginbill” will be 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 30 at the South Whidbey Tilth classroom.

The informative lecture and farm walk will help participants learn to identify and how to manage noxious weed on Whidbey properties. Handouts are provided.

Seth Luginbill currently serves as the Noxious Weed Program Coordinator for the Island County Noxious Weed Control Board. He comes with a background in botany and natural resource management. No fee. If you have questions, contact education@southwhidbeytilth.org.
