As the proud mother of a wonderful, intelligent, talented, loving, gay daughter who happens to have a partner who I love very much, along with their beloved son, my dear grandson Jacob, I find that I must speak out for them and millions of other people like them.
I am appalled at the way they have been treated lately – and now the rejection of the anti-discrimination bill on the floor of the Washington State Senate. It makes me ashamed to be living in a state that could, in this day and age, advocate discrimination against anyone, let alone a gay person who works, pays taxes and goes to war bleeding red blood like a lot of our state citizens.
I can’t help but wonder if this is part of a movement by religious fanatics to exert influence over some of our government decisions. Has anyone considered the ramifications of this legislative failure? Will we go through the same scenario such as banishment from restaurants, jobs, schools, etc? Next will come the beatings and the refusal of medical services to treat them. No wonder Jesus sweated blood when he saw the future of the world pass in front of his sympathetic eyes.
The recent action, or lack thereof, on the Senate floor has created an awareness in ourselves and our community regarding this flagrant violation of human rights. It could be compared to the pre-takeover events in the Germany of the early 1930s. In some not too distant future time will “well meaning†zealots lead us down a path that could end up in gay genocide in the name of Jesus? This may seem extreme, but there is presently a worldwide movement to eliminate “infidels†in the name of Allah. Maybe down the road gays wont be the only targets.
I implore the sensible majority to keep the guard up and take steps to preserve the rights and benefits for all citizens in this great country of ours. Washington State government and the world’s great religions, please respect the feelings of the majority. A talented, productive (taxpaying and voting), sensitive, God-fearing citizen is a hard thing to lose.
