True to the script, Coupeville and Sultan played another close soccer match; this time the visiting Turks prevailed in a shootout at Mickey Clark Field Thursday, Sept. 30.

Wolves’ coach Mike Thornton said regardless of the two teams’ records, they “always have close games, always have a fight.”

There is no closer game than a tie, and the two teams fought to a 1-1 draw after regulation. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Turks hit their first three shootout tries to one by Coupeville’s Anna Bailey to get the win.

Sultan may have snared the win, but Coupeville dominated the match, particularly in the second half and the overtime periods. However, the Wolves couldn’t pull ahead.

Sultan struck quickly in the contest, netting a goal in the third minute. Coupeville countered with Amy Craggs’ goal off an assist by Kelsey Miranda in the 62nd minute.

Slow starts have been a problem for the Wolves. Thornton said “we have to trigger them” to play the first half like the second.

Sultan’s win evened the two teams’ Cascade Conference records at 1-5. The Wolves are 3-5 for the year; the Turks are 1-6.

Coupeville’s next three matches are on the road starting with Lakewood (5-0, 6-0) Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.
