The Oak Harbor soccer team celebrated twice in its 2-1, overtime upset win over Meadowdale Thursday, April 21, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The Wildcats began the first celebration when they believed the match was over when Caley Powers hit a goal off an assist from Michael Shevchuk halfway through the second overtime period.

The official and the Meadowdale coach, however, believed that overtime wasn’t sudden death and the match needed to continue.  After a long discussion and a review of the rule book, it was determined the match was over on Powers’ goal, and Oak Harbor celebrated again.

The Mavericks scored first in regulation, then the Wildcats countered with a goal from Shevchuk assisted by Alex Krantz.

Tucker Lundstrom manned the goal for Oak Harbor and blanked the Mavericks in the overtime periods.

Oak Harbor coach Brian Thompson said, “Great night for those young men. And a great game by both teams.”

The win helped keep Oak Harbor’s faint playoff hopes alive. The top six teams advance and the Wildcats (2-11, 2-9) are in seventh, a game behind Lynnwood (3-9-1, 3-8) and 1.5 games behind Meadowdale (5-8, 4-8) with three matches left.

Oak Harbor, however, needs to finish ahead, not tied with, Lynnwood because the Royals hold the tie-breaker between the schools because they won both matches with the Wildcats this year.
