Oak Harbor bid farewell to the the EA-6B Prowler during a celebration that culminated with a final flyover during an open house at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Saturday.

Hundreds of current and former EA-6B Prowler crewmembers converged on Oak Harbor last week to pay tribute to the venerable aircraft during a three-day Prowler Sunset Celebration.

The Navy is retiring the Prowler after 45 years of history as the Navy’s first electronic attack aircraft. The aircraft has been based at NAS Whidbey since its start in 1971.

It will continue to be used by the Marine Corps.

As part of the June 25-27 event, the Commander Electronic Attack Wing Fleet hosted a memorial ceremony Friday paying tribute to the aircraft and its crews. A missing-man formation flyby was held as part of that memorial.

NAS Whidbey was opened to the public on a sunny Saturday. Two hangars were opened and lined with information booths and play areas for children to be entertained.

The Navy Band Northwest also performed.
