For a brief moment victory was in Coupeville’s grasp.

But as quickly as wind gusts ripped miniature dust storms across Ebey’s Prairie on Friday, the Wolfpack’s playoff hopes were gone.

Carrying a 2-1 advantage into the sixth inning, Coupeville was in the spot it wanted to be.

“I really felt like if we could get through that inning, with the middle of their order, we would be in good shape,” CHS coach Willie Smith said.

Instead, Friday Harbor’s bats came alive against Coupeville starter Mike Bagby and reliever Alex Evans, erupting for eight runs and an eventual 9-2 victory.

The Wolverines tallied six hits and two walks in the sixth. They also scored three runs off two crucial errors.

“All the things that we’d been doing well…they all just kind of fell apart,” Smith said.

Friday Harbor’s Chas Lawson broke the rally open after a teammate walked to start the inning. Lawson followed with a hard-hit RBI double past the bag at third, tying the contest. The Wolverines then scored via an errant throw to first, two infield singles, a bases loaded walk and two more runs on another error. Lawson capped the inning off, nailing a two-run RBI double into the gap.

“When you play a team like that you just can’t make those kind of mistakes,” Smith said.

Coupeville earned its only lead of the contest just prior to the sixth-inning collapse.

Sophomore Kyle Wilcox led the bottom of the fifth off with a single and a steal of second. Bagby followed, lacing his third hit of the game to center for an RBI.

Evans provided the Wolves’ other RBI on a two-out bloop double down the left field line in the third.

Coupeville needed to win Friday and again Monday against Friday Harbor to make the playoffs.

The playoffs were out of reach Monday, but that didn’t stop the Coupeville baseball team from giving its all.

The Wolves battled toe-to-toe with league champ Friday Harbor on its home field before losing 7-6 in 11 innings.

Coupeville trailed 6-0 in the third inning before reliever Alex Evans came in and shut down the Wolverine bats.

Evans held Friday Harbor scoreless through six innings and struck out 14.

CHS chipped its way back into the game before tying the contest in the top of the seventh.

Bagby drove in one run on an RBI double and the Wolves pushed the tying run across the plate on a Wolverine throwing error.

The game remained tied for four more innings until Friday Harbor scored on a two-out RBI double in the 11th.

Bagby led CHS at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles. Freshman Geoff Wacker was 2-for-4 and junior Cory Black was 2-for-5.

Coupeville ended its season in third place of the Northwest A/B at 8-4 in league and 9-8 overall.

The Wolves return all but two seniors, Bagby and Jack Armstrong, next season.
