The prize patrol visited Oak Harbor High School and handed out everything from a trip to Disneyland to a free teeth whitening.
The prize patrol gave these gifsts to the students who sold the most newspaper subscriptions for a fund-raiser benefiting the Rotary Stadium Fundraising Coalition, which is a group trying to raise $1 million to help the school district offset costs for construction of new athletic facilities at the high school.
Christina Robison took grand prize honors, earning a trip to Disneyland with $200 in spending money. Marcia Van Dyke, Whidbey News-Times publisher, presented Robison her prize in front of an enthusiastic and encouraging NJROTC class.
Robison earned 45 points during the three month contest. Participants earned one point for every one-year subscription and two points for every two-year subscription to the Whidbey News-Times.
Andrea Sutter took second place, and a home vending machine, by earning 18 points. Patrick Royce’s 16 points gave him third place and a two-day ski trip to Whistler with $100 in spending money.
With every one-year subscription, the Whidbey News-Times donated $10 and with every two-year subscription, the News-Times donated $30 to the athletic facility fund.
Van Dyke said the News-Times donated more than $5,000 to the stadium effort through the subscription drive and cash donations.
The grand prize winners weren’t the only victors in the subscription drive. Students who sold the most subscriptions in February were also announced.
Van Dyke, along with school Principal Dwight Lundstrom, roamed through the hallways Friday morning visiting individual winners during class.
Katie Schoeffling won first place and took home a portable DVD player. Grand prize winner Robison also earned second place for the month of February and took home an X-Box. Edmundo Corrales earned third place for the month and a $150 gift certificate to the Jewelry Gallery. Erin Jewell earned fourth place and a $150 gift certificate to the Gallery Salon. Tosh Welshans earned fifth place and low-profile car seats. Keath Warley earned fifth place and teeth whitening worth $500, while Brian Hughes earned seventh place and a $50 gift certificate to Les Schwab.
Oak Harbor noon Rotary volunteers have raised approximately $300,000 since fund-raising efforts began in May 2004. The proposed athletic facility at the high school would include a football and soccer stadium, track and field, baseball field, tennis courts and a practice soccer/football field.
