Election season on Whidbey Island is about to become more animated.

A series of voters forums are planned over the next couple of months to give the electorate the opportunity to learn about the candidates, as well as the hospital’s bond proposal.

The hot contests are in Oak Harbor this year, which may be obvious by the proliferation of campaign signs. Four council seats are on the ballot and they all are contested.

Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce is holding two candidate forums this year. The first is the luncheon meeting at the Elks Club on Thursday, Sept. 19.

On Oct. 3, the chamber is holding a breakfast forum at 7:30 a.m. at the Best Western.

Kathy Reed, the chamber’s executive director, said both events are open to the public, but those interested in attending must RSVP.

City Council candidates will each have four minutes to speak at the luncheon, but will get 10 minutes at the breakfast session.

In addition, Whidbey General Hospital’s proposal will be discussed.

Regency on Whidbey is holding candidate forums at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays this month, including Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. The retirement and assisted living facility is located at 1049 Southwest Kimball Drive in Oak Harbor.

The League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island is organizing three fall forums.

A two-hour forum in Oak Harbor is 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Elks Club. It will cover the four council positions and two Oak Harbor School Board positions, as well as initiatives 517 and 522.

A forum will also be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Coupeville Rec Hall. There will be candidates for two Coupeville Town Council positions, two Coupeville School Board positions, two Port of Coupeville positions and three Whidbey General Hospital board of director positions.

The forum on South Whidbey will be at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 10 at Trinity Lutheran.
