Two Whidbey Island men accused of leading law enforcement officers in separate high-speed chases are facing charges in Island County Superior Court.

Prosecutors charged Jeffrey Cannon, 27, and Brian Fosmo, 47, with attempting to elude a pursuing vehicle and driving under the influence.

They both have pleaded not guilty. If convicted, they each could face up to 60 days in jail.

In one case, Island County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Caulk was on patrol on Taylor Road in the early morning of July 17 and pulled behind a speeding car driven by Cannon, his report states.

Caulk chased the car, which turned onto Amberwood Lane without lights. The car fishtailed on the gravel road at each turn and finally crashed into blackberry bushes, Caulk wrote.

Afterward, Cannon told the deputy “that was so cool. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.” Cannon refused a breath test, court records show.

In the other case, State Trooper Bruce Maier caught Fosmo driving a speeding motorcycle on Highway 525 in Greenbank March 12, Maier’s report states.

Maier chased the motorcycle onto Classic Road and Honeymoon Bay Road at speeds of 90 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, Maier wrote. The State Patrol supervisor finally called off the pursuit because of safety concerns.

Sgt. Rick Norrie with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, however, got involved in the chase. He followed the motorcycle to a Raindrop Lane residence, where he shot Fosmo with a Taser gun and arrested him, court records state.

Fosmo’s breathalyzer test showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.141 and 0.132, according to court documents. A level of 0.08 in the legal limit.
