A 29-year-old Oak Harbor man facing trial for allegedly choking a woman last fall was recently arrested again on suspicion of choking a different girlfriend, court documents indicate.

Michael Chappelle is facing exactly the same four counts in both cases, specifically assault in the second degree by strangulation, unlawful imprisonment, harassment (threats to kill) and assault in the fourth degree. They are all filed as domestic-violence-related charges.

In response, Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock revoked Michael Chappelle’s pre-trial release at a March 23 hearing and ordered him held in jail.

In the most recent case, a 30-year-old Oak Harbor woman reported to police that Chappelle, whom she had been dating for about three months, had assaulted her at her apartment, according to a report by Officer Lisa Powers with the Oak Harbor Police. The woman said Chappelle was highly intoxicated at the time.

The woman claimed Chappelle grabbed her by the hair and threw her on the couch, choked her until she couldn’t breathe, punched her numerous times in the face, dragged her to the kitchen, then hit and kicked her as she curled into a fetal position, Powers wrote.

In addition, the report states that Chappelle threatened to kill her and strangled her when she tried to scream.

In the separate case, Chappelle was accused of assaulting a 25-year-old woman, also after he had been drinking. Oak Harbor Police Officer Serloyd Carter investigated the alleged assault that occurred Nov. 4 and 5, 2010.

The woman claimed Chappelle threw her to the ground and choked her. The next night, Chappelle assaulted her while she was in bed and threw her around the room, she claimed. He told her he had her keys and she couldn’t leave; he also threatened to kill her if she left, according to Carter’s report.

After he was arrested, Chappelle denied that he assaulted the woman. He suggested that she harmed herself to get him in trouble, Carter wrote.
