Season ends at districts for Wildcat volleyball team

OHHS beats Monroe in first match, then falls to Kamiak in three games

An impressive season came to an end for the Oak Harbor volleyball team Saturday afternoon at Marysville as they dropped their second match of the district tournament, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 to Kamiak.

“We were very disappointed that we didn’t win and go to state, but the girls are really proud of how they played and I’m proud of how they played,” OHHS coach Kerri Molitor said.

Becoming the first Wildcat volleyball team to make the district tournament in 11 years, Oak Harbor didn’t leave empty handed.

In the first match of the losers’ bracket, the Wildcats defeated Monroe in five games, 25-15, 20-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-9.

Ashley Kingma had 42 assists, while Heidi McNeill paved the way in kills with 20. Miranda Thiel had 10 kills, followed by Krystal Rousselle and Jennifer Muzzall with seven apiece. Muzzall also added eight blocks.

Unfortunately for Oak Harbor, playing five games in their first match may have wore on them in the second match they played just 30 minutes later.

“We were tired,” Molitor said. “I don’t think it was so much that we were physically tired…emotionally we were also.”

Kingma again led Oak Harbor in assists against Kamiak with 24 in the three games. McNeill had 11 kills, while Muzzall had nine kills and was 40-percent on her hitting efficiency.

The Wildcats ended the season with a 7-1 league record and were 13-4 overall.

Everett ended up taking first in the district tournament, followed by Snohomish and Jackson, who also earned state berths.

It’s possible Oak Harbor could have a shot of making some noise next year as they only lose three seniors from this year’s team.

“This year was a tremendous experience for us to build on for next year,” Molitor said.

Those playing their final volleyball games on Saturday included Heidi McNeill, Cassie LaMont and Jamesa Woods.
