After making a little money, the Coupeville School Board approved adjustments to facility rentals fees to ensure they come as close as possible to breaking even at the end of the fiscal year.

A summary of the 2009-2010 facility rentals, costs and revenue through June showed the district netting $3,575.01 with generated revenues at $11,410 and expenditures at $7,834.99.

Superintendent Patty Page said at the August board meeting that by adjusting rental fees across the board, they’ll be able to come closer to breaking even, which is the school district’s goal.

“Our purpose is not to make money on this, it’s to be self-supportive,” she said.

Previously rental fees varied by class category and the desired rented space, such as the library, conference room, gym and commons.

There are five class categories of renters. Class 1 consists of Coupeville School District school-affiliated groups such as the PTA.

Class 2 consists of governmental agencies or community service organizations.

Class 3 consists of local adult recreational groups.

Class 4 consists of local nonprofit organizations or out-of-district school groups.

Class 5 consists of for-profit organizations or businesses.

Before Classes 1 and 2 used facilities for free, Class 3 rented at rates between $5 and 10 per hour, Class 4 rented at rates between $10 and 15 per hour, and Class 5 at rates between $10 and 20 per hour with the exception of the athletic field.

With the changes in place, Classes 1 and 2 will still be able to rent for free. However, Class 3 rates will be standardized at $8 per hour for every space, Class 4 at $15 for every space and Class 5 at $20 with the exception of the athletic field which still rents for $100 per hour.

Additional rental fees for support services such as lighting and custodial help were also altered.

In her report, Page also noted that standardizing rates by class and room type will make it easier to calculate rentals fees in the online district calender and facility rental system that will be instituted.
