A counselor at Oak Harbor Intermediate School was named a School Counselor of the Year Finalist.

Oak Harbor Intermediate School Counselor Chandra Mays was named a School Counselor of the Year Finalist for the Washington School Counselors Association, according to a newsletter from the district.

Mays has been working at the school for over a decade and is known for her data-driven approach to counseling, ensuring that every student receives access to essential services and support at Oak Harbor Intermediate School.

As a leader in Oak Harbor Public Schools, she actively participates in data-driven decision-making, contributing to the development and implementation of effective interventions. As a co-leader, she employs a holistic approach to address chronic absenteeism, connecting students and families with essential resources. She also collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive support for students with diverse needs, including academic, behavioral, and social-emotional challenges, Principal Raenette Wood wrote in her award submission.

Beyond her leadership roles, Mays provides individual and group counseling, empowering students with resilience-building skills, coping strategies, and the confidence to achieve their goals. She is a fierce advocate for underrepresented students, ensuring they have the support and opportunities to thrive.

“Ms. Mays is a true asset to our school community,” Wood wrote. “Her passion and commitment to student success make her an exemplary school counselor, and we are incredibly proud of her achievement.”
