Safeway now offers gas in Oak Harbor

Until automobiles run exclusively on refined vegetable oil or cow dung, Safeway has provided yet another gas station in Oak Harbor.

After a lengthy construction project, the facility on the corner of Highway 20 and Barrington where Godfather’s Pizza once stood started pumping gas on Wednesday morning and then shut down for the remainder of the day when the power went out.

No representatives from the corporation were available for comment on the flashy new gas station, which passersby will notice has a very bright sign advertising very competitive petrol prices.

There were some amused chuckles early in the week when people saw gas priced at over $6 a gallon, but that was only Safeway testing its digital sign equipment. When the true price was posted, gas users took notice.

Unleaded was advertised at $2.37 per gallon, matching the lowest price in town. But Safeway Club Card holders get another 6 cents per gallon knocked off, resulting in gas for the island-low of $2.31. As a result, faithful Safeway customers flocked to the new gas station with its bright white pumps.

A customer Friday morning emerging from the store portion of the gas station with a soft drink led to rumors that there are beverages and possibly snacks for sale inside, should the short walk to the actual Safeway grocery store prove too daunting.
