Safety: Keep your kids in sight

A week or so ago, my wife and I were driving east from the post office on SE Barrington Drive when we saw a small child, 4 or 5, walking and skipping east, barefoot and alone, along the north side sidewalk. She was passing the motel parking lot when we pulled up and stopped. My wife asked her where she was going and suggested that she go back home. My wife then held her hand and walked back 3/4 of a block to the apartment where she lived. Her parents were surprised that she had wandered off.

Even in Oak Harbor, this is very dangerous behavior. Someone else could have easily scooped her up — never to be seen again.

Hopefully, your newspaper can again urge parents to be aware of their young children’s locations at all times.
