An RV became engulfed in flames Monday afternoon after being dragged down the road on its wheel rims.

North Whidbey Fire and Rescue responded to the fire at 4:33 p.m. Nov. 8. Firefighters found the burning RV on Monkey Hill Road on North Whidbey and determined the fire was caused by sparks flying up from the rims, on which there were no tires, according to Fire Chief John Clark.

Several Whidbey residents reported seeing a driver dragging the sparking RV along the road near Moran Beach and other locations, according to comments on Alert Whidbey 2.0 Facebook post about the incident. The posts indicated that the driver towing the RV left the scene.

According to Clark, responders had the fire under control within 15 minutes and completely extinguished after around 30 minutes. The RV was unoccupied. Some overhead power lines were damaged by the fire.

Clark said the Island County Sheriff’s Office has information about the owners of the RV and are investigating the incident.
