Renton man jumps from bridge

A Renton man died after jumping off Deception Pass Bridge June 30, according to the Island County coroner.

The man was identified as 30-year-old Joshua Burke, Coroner Robert Bishop said.

Burke was also known as Jay Ayyar.

Several people on the scenic bridge witnessed Burke leap off the side at about 6:36 p.m., Bishop said. The bridge is approximately 180 feet off the water.

A water rescue boat with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue found the man’s body about 45 minutes later, Bishop said. He was transported to Cornet Bay, where he was pronounced dead.

Burke’s car was found parked near the bridge and impounded. A suicide note was not located in the car.

Bishop said he had a difficult time locating Burke’s next of kin because he had changed his name, but eventually was able to contact the man’s partner in Renton.
