Two Oak Harbor women wore red hats and were acting giddy when they picked up their Quinto winnings at the Everett lottery office Tuesday.
Nevertheless, Sally Berger and Peggy Minnich told Washington’s Lottery officials they don’t want a big fuss made over their good fortune. They didn’t want to be contacted by newspapers, radio or TV stations.
The two women, who have been friends for 35 years, split the $680,000 prize.
Berger purchased the winning ticket at a 7-Eleven store, located at Highway 20 next to Taco Bell, on the Saturday before the Feb. 15 drawing.
Greg and Linda Wasinger own the franchises of the two 7-Eleven stores in Oak Harbor. Greg said Berger and Minnich have been loyal customers for about 20 years. He said they came in twice a week to buy Quinto tickets and had a pact to share the prize if they ever won.
According to a press release from the state Lottery, Berger checked her ticket minutes before a lunch date with Minnich.
“My heart went pitter patter and I thought, ‘Those things match,’ and I was going to call Peggy but it was 17 minutes after 11 and she was to pick me up at 11:30, and so I said, ‘No, I would rather see her face,’†Berger told Lottery officials.
What will they spend the money on? Berger plans a cruise.Â
“I’ve always said I was going to take the Holland America cruise from Copenhagen up through St. Petersburg Russia into the Scandinavian countries,†she said.
Minnich plans to stay a little closer to home.
“I have a husband who plays golf and I told him if I ever won I’d take him to Pebble Beach — that’s a dream,†she said.
The Wasingers are also winners. Greg said the lottery officials will present them with a check Monday morning for 1 percent of the prize, which is $6,800. The Wasingers have to share the money with the 7-Eleven corporation.
Even though the winners are shy about publicity, Greg said the prize caused a lot of excitement.
“It’s big news in town,†he said.
