Race the Reserve draws largest field

The Fifth Annual Race the Reserve attracted a record turnout Saturday, Aug. 1, in Coupeville.

Race the Reserve is the primary fundraiser for the Parents of the Coupeville High School Class of 2016; the group provides safe and sober CHS graduation activities.

This year’s race included 342 finishers and nearly 400 registrations, according to former race director Deb Savalza.

The event featured three runs: a half marathon, a 10K and a 5K.

Benjamin Clark, 23, of Moscow, Idaho, won the main event, the half marathon, in 1:30:32.

Jon Crimmins, 39, was the top Coupeville finisher, placing eighth overall out of 128 in 1:42:15. Coupeville women were led by last year’s race manager, Elizabeth Bitting, 46, who placed 33rd (12th among women) in 1:57:45.4.

Sammamish’s Brian Comer, 21, won the 110-runner 10K in 36.52.1.

Coupeville leaders where Sarah Chombeau, 29, 13th overall and seventh among women (1:55:072), and Daniel Verble, 48, 16th overall and ninth among men (1:57:16.2).

In the 5K, Redmond’s Andy Dunn, 52, topped the field of 104 in 17:40.8.

After Dunn, youngsters ruled the race. The next six finishers are all younger than 19, and Coupeville’s Samuel Wynn, 12, was first among local males and fifth overall in 21:54.1. Coupeville’s Olivia Flack finished seventh and fourth among females (22:00.9).
