Beginning next week, the remaining section of SE Pioneer Way in the downtown area will permanently convert to an eastbound one-way street.

The first section of roadway, from City Beach to Dock Street, was converted to a one-way in March when road crews began pulverizing the street. Work on phase two, from Dock Street to Midway Boulevard, is scheduled to begin Monday morning.

Pulverization is expected to go as quickly as it did during phase one, according to Larry Cort, the city’s project manager for the Pioneer Way improvement project.

“It could take a little more time because the street is longer but we expect it will be done that afternoon,” Cort said.

Once complete, crews will then begin tearing up sidewalks in front of businesses. It can be very disruptive and messy but the contractor, Strider Construction, did a good preparing a decent walking surface during the first phase of the project, he said.

To combat dusty conditions, Strider will have a water truck on hand. Also, the city has doormats available for businesses and has arranged to begin periodic exterior window cleaning.

All work is expected to cease on Thursday so the street can be prepared for Holland Happening. The three-day event celebrates the city’s Dutch Heritage with activities ranging from a parade to vendors selling arts and crafts.

“Thursday will be almost exclusively reserved for dressing up the street for the Holland Happening event,” he said.
