Older adults may be able to swim, water walk or do water aerobics for free thanks to a new program at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool in Oak Harbor.
Pool officials are teaming up with SilverSneakers, a nationwide company that provides fitness classes and programs.
SilverSneaker programs are covered by Medicare health plans. Some major insurers that participate include Group Health, Humana, Premera Blue Cross and Regence BlueShield. Check with your insurer to see if SilverSneakers is covered.
The pool will be reimbursed for up to $20 a month for each person. Patrons who qualify can attend lap swim, open swim and water aerobics for free as many times as they wish.
“It’s something we get a ton of requests for from our patrons,” said Julie Millang, a pool employee.
The pool is holding a fair to sign up interested individuals 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
If you already have a SilverSneakers card, bring it. You also will have to sign a liability waiver. If you aren’t a SilverSneakers member, you can get more information on how to sign up at www.silversneakers.com or pool staff can help you sign up during the event or after.
