Prepare to be haunted

From the room full of spiders to the electric chair, this year’s haunted house at the Roller Barn provides fun and frights for children and adults alike.

The haunted house, known as Frightville IV, which is open today, closed Sunday and then open again for the scariest night of all — Halloween.

Monday evening will probably be the busiest time — when people don their costumes and head to the haunted house as they celebrate Halloween.

Volunteer Mike Lee said there are several new twists to this year’s haunted house located in the basement of the Roller Barn in Oak Harbor.

Those twists include an electric chair, a hangman’s room and a tomb. Also, there’s several scenes from popular horror movies that include Pinhead from “Hellraiser.”

Walking through the haunted house, one encounters, people behind bars, werewolves and the undead who pop out of unexpected corners of the dark, smoke-filled house.

Volunteers from the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit, Whidbey Island, began building the haunted house in August. They brought smoke machines, strobe lights, bars, mirrors, spiders, and the television that has become the stalwart of the haunted house.

In addition to their work setting up the haunted house, 25 to 30 actors get dressed in scary costumes to “haunt” the house when its open.

Blair Ransom said his daughter, Kameron was waiting all year for the haunted house and now wouldn’t let him go. It turned out to be a bit too scary for Kameron who didn’t go through the house.

In addition to evenings of frightful fun for people, proceeds from the haunted house support the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club, an organization that volunteers are eager to help.

“The Boys and Girls Club helped me out as a kid,” said volunteer Tre’ York, adding that he looked forward to investing time and effort into the haunted house.

Roosevelt Rumble, executive director for the Boys and Girls Club, said the haunted house raised approximately $4,800 last year. In addition to the fund raiser, he said the haunted house provides a safe, controlled place for children to enjoy their halloween.
