‘Cats seventh at Everett tournament
Oak Harbor High School’s wrestling team had a good showing at Saturday’s Everett Classic Wrestling Tournament, scoring 89.50 points to finish in seventh place among the 19 teams entered in the event.
The Wildcats had three wrestlers place in the varsity half of the competition, led by sophomore Connar Zimmerman who was crowned tournament champion in the 125-pound weight division.
Senior John Tuttle was second at 140 pounds and Royce Cardwell, also a senior, finished third in the 119-pound weight class.
Wolves fall to Granite Falls, King’s
Back-to-back road games proved difficult for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team.
On Friday, the team traveled to Granite Falls where the Tigers defeated the Wolves 38-29.
Coming back Saturday against the always strong King’s High School team, Coupeville had no answer for the Knights and were overwhelmed 53-16.
The Wolves held an 8-2 lead after the first quarter against Granite Falls, but fell apart in the second and third quarters scoring just nine points to trail 23-17 heading into the final eight minutes.
Megan Smith scored 17 points for Coupeville. Freshman Cassidi Rosenkrance talled six points and Katie Smith added four. Mandi Murdy rounded out the Wolf Pack scoring attack with two points,
King’s held the Wolves to single digit scoring in every period in Saturday’s matchup to remain undefeated in league games.
Coupeville never got its scoring game going and Megan Smith was held to only five points.
Rosenkrance finished with four points for the Wolves.
The losses drop Coupeville’s record to 0-3 in Cascade Conference games and 3-6 overall.
Coupeville hosts Sultan in a 7 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 16.
Wildcats lose a close one
A big fourth quarter rally fell just short as the Oak Harbor High School boys lost a tight 50-49 decision to Monroe in Saturday WesCo North basketball action.
The Wildcats took a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and were ahead 29-26 at halftime.
Monroe tightened up on defense in the third quarter holding the Wildcats to only six points, to take a 40-35 lead into the final period.
Oak Harbor out-scored the Bearcats 14-10 in the fourth quarter, only to fall a single point short.
Mike Washington Jr. scored a game-high 19 points for the Wildcats and teammate Jay Stout had 15.
Snohomish upends Oak Harbor
League-leading Snohomish demonstrated Monday evening why the team is state ranked in the Class 4A basketball coaches’ poll.
Streaking out to a 15-2 lead after the first quarter of play, the Panthers rolled to a 56-29 victory over the Wildcats in WesCo North action.
Snohomish dominated play from the opening tip and no Oak Harbor player scored in double figures.
Trailing 27-13 at haltime the Wildcats put up 14 points in the third period, but managed to score only two in the final eight minutes to fall to 2-2 in league games and 5-3 overall.
Jessica Denmon, Kathryn Fisken and Jennifer Jansen scored seven points each for Oak Harbor, and Nicole Mowbray had six.
The Panthers 6-0 league, 8-2 overall, were led by Katie Benson with a game-high 20 points and teammate Karley Lampman who added 17 points.
Oak Harbor will try to get back on the winning track hosting Marysville-Pilchuck in a 7:30 p.m. game today.
