Wildcats win first match in WesCo
Despite a tie score, 34-34, in Monday’s wrestling against Everett, the Oak Harbor grapplers earned their first WesCo North victory of the season on the tiebreaker criteria. Brandon Stratton (135), Ben Page (140), John Tuttle (145), Jarred Tyson (152) and Royce Cardwell (119), were all winners via pinfall for the Wildcats.
Cory Trimbur (103) and Connar Zimmerman (125) won their bouts via decision.
Timbur won a hard-fought bout 2-0, while Zimmerman shutout his opponent 9-0.
Marysville-Pilchuck 36, Oak Harbor 25
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Oak Harbor hosted undefeated Marysville-Pilchuck in another WesCo North match and the Wildcats gave the Tomahawks all they wanted before dropping a close 36-25 decision.
Stratton, Tuttle and Trimbur won their bouts via pinfall.
Cardwell won his bout via technical fall 15-0, while Zimmerman and Page were major decision victors with scores of 11-0 and 12-2, respectively.
The Wildcats are 1-3 in league matches and 2-5 overall.
Tigers nip Wolves on court
Coupeville played four solid quarters in Tuesday’s Cascade Conference basketball game against league-leading Archbishop Murphy High School.
Three players scored in double figures but it wasn’t quite enough as the Tigers pulled out a narrow 59-55 victory over the Wolf Pack.
Cody Peters led Coupeville with 19 points. Teammates Hunter Hammer and Tim Walstad scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Wolves who had their league record slip to 1-3 with the loss.
Coupeville trailed 32-26 at halftime.
J.D. Melton scored a game-high 21 points for Archbishop Murphy (3-0 league, 5-3 overall) and Paris Felder added 14 points.
Coupeville thumped 77-25
Undefeated Archbishop Murphy had no trouble upping its Cascade Conference record to 3-0 holding host Coupeville High School to single digit scoring in every quarter en route to a 77-25 basketball victory Tuesday evening.
The Tigers (8-0) overall, went up 21-7 after the first eight minutes of action and by halftime, were on cruise control with a 48-14 lead.
Coupeville lost its fourth-straight league game to fall to 0-4 in the conference and 2-7 overall.
Junior Megan Smith paced the Wolves with 16 points and was the only Coupeville player to score in double figures. Teammate Marie Hesselgrave had five points.
Archbishop Murphy had three players score in double figures, led by Savannah Fletcher with a game-high 17 points. Megan Carlson added 12 points and Sam Pettinger chipped in with 10.
