The Oak Harbor High School softball team had two tough league games to begin the 2009 WesCo North season.

Opening the season with three straight non-league victories, the Wildcats lost at home on Thursday 9-1 to Snohomish, after falling 19-0 at Cascade in a Tuesday five-inning contest.

Oak Harbor managed just four hits against Snohomish and struck out 12 times.

Nicole Mowbray was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in the only Wildcat run. Kaylee Meders was 1-for-3 with a double and Kayla Ratliff was 1-for-3 with a double and scored the only run.

Ratliff struck out five and walked one on the mound, while giving up 11 hits.

On Tuesday, Cascade scored 19 runs in the first two innings of Tuesday’s game and handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Ratliff started on the mound for Oak Harbor and gave up eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, and 11 more in the bottom of the second.

Bruin pitcher Sam Munger struck out eight Oak Harbor batters in the five-inning game without giving up a hit.

“Tuesday was a hard loss for us,” coach Jessica Weikle said. “In the cold, dreary rain, the Wildcats were unable to make outs, get hits, or find a way to get on base.”

Oak Harbor is 3-2 on the season.

Tomahawks clip Wildcats 5-1 in soccer

At Marysville Tuesday evening, Seth Jones scored two goals in the first half and the Tomahawks defeated Oak Harbor High School 5-1 in WesCo North soccer action.

Undefeated Marysville-Pilchuck upped the lead to 3-1 in the first half on a goal by Brady Ballew, before Kevin Flavin scored an unassisted goal for the Wildcats.

The Tomahawks scored two more goals in the second half on shots by Kevin Chavez and John Crenshaw.

Oak Harbor is 2-2 in league games this season.

Originally scheduled for Thursday, March 19, the Oak Harbor and Lake Stevens high school tennis teams finally got the match played Wednesday afternoon after several postponements due to inclement weather conditions.

The Wildcats won two of the four singles matches and one of three in doubles, as the Vikings pulled out a narrow 4-3 victory.

Erin Neilon captured the third singles match beating Chelsea Boren 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Molly DeLeon was a straight-set winner 6-2, 6-0 over Kristen Call in fourth singles.

The third doubles team of Abi Cone and Beverly Gianno were 6-4, 6-2 winners over the Lake Stevens team of Makenzie Grafe and Makenzie Henderson.

Coming back in a home match Thursday against Snohomish, Neilon and DeLeon and remained undefeated for Oak Harbor (1-2 league) winning the third and fourth singles matches, but those were the only victories in the 5-2 loss.

Neilon defeated Kellen Shaughnessy 6-2, 6-1, and DeLeon was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Tiffany Morgan.

Tigers hammer Wolves in softball

Archbishop Murphy High school scored nine runs in the top of the third inning and went on to defeat the Coupeville softball team 16-2 in a Cascade Conference game Wednesday afternoon.

The game was called after five inning on the 10-run rule.

Holding a 4-0 lead, the Tigers jumped on Wolf Pack pitcher Alexis Trumbull in the top of the third inning to put the game away.

The Tigers had 13 hits in the game.

“We also made five errors in the game that that didn’t help any, either,” coach Denny Zylstra said.

Archbishop Murphy hurler Brittany Allen gave up just one hit and struck out 14 Coupeville batters in her five-inning stint on the mound.

Oak Harbor loses tough one at Snohomish

The Oak Harbor High School baseball team held a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning Thursday evening at Snohomish, but were unable hold on and lost 11-7 in a WesCo North game.

Oak Harbor (0-2 league, 2-4 overall) scored a run in the first inning, four runs in the top of the second and two more in the top of the third to build the early lead.

The Panthers battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Snohomish put the game away with six big runs.

Jay Stout was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Wildcats.

Island Flyers win in Maple Valley

Moving and Grooving’s Island Flyers tumbling and trampoline team continued its winning ways at the Derby Days competition Saturday, March 21, in Maple Valley.

Age-group champions were 8-year-old Kelly Gruenwald in Level 3 tumbling and double mini; 10-year-old Lauren Aspery in Level 5 tumbling; 12-year-old Juliet Aspery in Level 5 double mini; and 12-year-old Amelid Berner in Level 5 trampoline.

The team’s next competition is Saturday, April 4, in Mount Vernon
