Poultry truck highlights tonight’s Farm Forum in Coupeville

Join the Whidbey Island Conservation District from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 11 for the Whidbey Island Farm Forum at Nordic Hall in Coupeville.

The forum will highlight the Mobile Poultry Processing Unit currently managed by the Northwest Agriculture Business Center.Executive director David Bauermeister will be on hand to offer tours of the processing truck and answer any questions about the unit.

Karen Bishop of the Whidbey Conservation Distrit is coordinating the event.

“The Whidbey Farm Forum is a great opportunity for farmers to come together and learn of local and regional resources that are available to enhance and add value to their farms,” Bishop said.

Carlotta M. Donisi from the USDA Rural Development Area Office in Olympia also will be at the forum to present on value-added product opportunities as well as the rural energy grants.

The USDA Rural Development office offers financial assistance to farmers.

“Supporting local food systems, value added agriculture and clean energy are high priority for USDA Rural Development,” Donisi said. “As the state local foods coordinator, I am especially interested in supporting farmers in our state by sharing the funding opportunities we have to offer.”

Kelly Keilwitz of Whidbey Sun and Wind also will be available to present and answer questions about local resources to advance alternative energy resources.
