Police investigating school incident

Police have not filed charges against a substitute teacher at the Oak Harbor Intermediate School accused of inappropriately touching students, but the investigation will continue, the Oak Harbor Police Department reported Friday.

Detectives interviewed several students — with parental permission — and also the substitute teacher, who denied the allegations. Detectives will speak with more students next week.

“Some of the witness statements could not be corroborated, did not match video evidence or changed during the interview process,” the police reported in a statement.

On Monday, Dec. 4, the school resource officer was notified that some students reported the teacher had “touched them on top of their clothes during class in ways that made them feel uncomfortable,” the police reported.

The school principal sent out an alert that day to parents, notifying them of the allegations. The alert said the substitute teacher was immediately dismissed and taken off the district substitute teacher list.

“This is certainly an upsetting situation, but we are doing all we can to take care of our students and make sure that this situation is thoroughly investigated,” the alert stated. “If you have additional information to share, please do not hesitate to contact us directly and we can put you in touch with the appropriate individual at OHPD.”
